How did you become involved with Brnoregion Microscopy?

I was introduced to Brnoregion Microscopy by my colleague from CEITEC Masaryk University (MUNI), Jiří Nováček, who has been naturally involved in this initiative due to his long-standing role as the head of the Core Facility for cryo-EM at CEITEC MUNI. My involvement may not seem as straight forward at first glance, as my position at CEITEC MUNI is not specifically tied to microscopy. Instead, my role is more general, focusing on supporting and strategically steering all scientific disciplines and support activities to advance research at the institute. I actively joined Brnoregion Microscopy in the summer of 2024, and I must say, the work has been incredibly fulfilling for me.

What role do you play in the community?

Initially, I approached my involvement as a form of backup support for CEITEC MUNI scientists who are deeply engaged with the community through their research activities. However, after attending several Brnoregion Microscopy meetings, I realized that my broader expertise in areas like education, talent development, and commercialization could also bring value to the community.

This is particularly evident in the area of education, where I contributed to the development of the recently established Master’s study programme in Microscopy at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. Supporting and further developing this programme to ensure its strong establishment in the study portfolio and its ability to train capable and versatile experts in microscopy is one of my key interests. We are currently working on accrediting the program in English, which will bring an exciting challenge: attracting talented students from abroad.

Additionally, I would like to mention the „ambassador role“ we are currently defining within the Brnoregion Microscopy community. It’s a role I aspire to take on in the future, representing and promoting the community’s initiatives and values.

What benefits does it bring to you?

Being part of Brnoregion Microscopy opens up new perspectives for me—connecting closely with the industry and other stakeholders in the field. It provides opportunities for fascinating discussions, a wealth of positive energy, and an influx of fresh ideas. It also challenges me with a new agenda, pushing me to acquire new skills and to view science from angles I hadn’t previously considered. Overall, it’s a tremendously enriching experience.

Do you have any message for the community?

I want to avoid sounding overly cliché or grandiose with phrases like „the sky is the limit“ or „let’s make microscopy great again“. Instead, I’d like to suggest something grounded and meaningful: „Let’s learn from each other!“

Who's also here

Meet the people behind Brnoregion’s world-class microscopy — the researchers, innovators, and visionaries driving progress, shaping the future of the field, and ensuring that whenever microscopy is discussed globally, the first association is Brnoregion.

Radka Martínková and Jan Neuman introduced me to this platform. Brnoregion Microscopy is really pushing forward concrete actions, rather than (blurry) visions and philosophical questions. And you can see that these actions are actually materializing,…
